There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den wagering is banned. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively small location in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime area, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest betting centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal capital acquired from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a number of controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; however, investment sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 17:00, and although visas are apparently needed to cross, there are methods around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge gambling hall, contains 150 slots and sixty tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slots and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the common gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel complex that highlights a number of luxuries on top of the gambling hall, which provides 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machines and 88 gaming tables.
